The AEG may be assigned to respond to Safety Recommendations that fall within their responsibility and expertise. Safety Recommendations are assigned by the FAA Aircraft Accident Investigation Division (AAI) for disposition. Safety Recommendations may come from the NTSB or the FAA Safety Recommendation Program. Response to all Safety Recommendations is coordinated back through AAI.

Respond to a Safety Recommendation

 

SUBTASK 1:

Safety Recommendation Assignment.

Objective / Skill:

Performance:

AEG receives assignment to respond to a safety recommendation from AAI. The AEG determines if assignment is within the AEG’s area of responsibility and expertise. AEG Manager assigns AEG inspector(s) to respond to the safety recommendation. If AEG involvement is not appropriate, return it to AAI.

Knowledge of FAA Safety Recommendation Program process and AEG Office responsibilities.

 

SUBTASK 2:

Create AEG office project record.

SUBTASK 3:

Investigate Safety Recommendation

Objective / Skill:

Performance:

Review and research the safety recommendation to determine if it is an appropriate remedy to the identified safety concern, then investigate and formulate an effective response to AAI.

Knowledge:

Knowledge of AVS safety concerns and oversight practices to correctly discern the appropriate response to a safety recommendation.

Analyze the proposed safety recommendation to understand background and contributing issues.

Research current and historical information related to the safety recommendation.

Contact and share information with affected entities to ensure comprehensive understanding of the safety concern. This may include the manufacturer and/or foreign regulatory agencies.

From workstation or office environment, utilizing personal contact, telephone, e-mail, or other available communication means.

Standards:

Thorough and comprehensive research.

Knowledge:

FAA policy publications system and how to research that information. Safety research organizations and how they distribute information.

 

SUBTASK 4:

Prepare Response

Prepare a written response to the safety recommendation.
