NextGen Technologies including operational approvals resulting in the issuance of an Operations Specification/Management Specification/Letter of Authorization (OpSpec/MSpec/LOA) by a principal inspector (PI)
The purpose of this process is to provide operational system safety oversight and analysis by reviewing and accepting the operational-use part of a proponent’s request to transition to new emerging technologies in accordance with appropriate Sections of Chapters 5, 9, and 15 of FS Order 1100.1 and other technologies specified by AFS-400. (Customers include both FAA-internal and industry proponents.)

Process Overview

AWO generally performs the role of regional lead. Other FAA entities at the regional or national level may also be involved depending on what is being approved. Examples of these projects include:

·    Performance Based NAS

·    Data Link Communications including Controller Pilot Data Link Communications (CPDLC) and Automatic Dependent Surveillance – Contract (ADS-C)

·    Automatic Dependent Surveillance - Broadcast (ADS-B)

·    Area Navigation (RNAV) and Required Navigation Performance (RNP)

·    Enhanced Flight Vision System (EFVS)

·    Required Navigation Performance (RNP) procedures with Authorization Required (AR)

·     Class II navigation using long-range navigation systems (RNP-4 and RNP-10 approvals)

·    Approach with Vertical guidance (APV), Special Authorization (SA) Category I/II and ILS Category II/III approaches (see task 5.4)

 

1.1. Confirm with Principal Inspector (PI) the proponent’s proposed operations and applications, and develop FAA operational approval process.

1.2. Confirm with PI the operational approval process for the proposed operation.

1.3. Coordinate operational procedures with other FAA lines of business.

1.4. Confirm with PI that operator has conducted required validation tests. Participate in fly ability evaluations as required.

1.5. Coordinate with PI on the issuance of the operational approval.
