5.3: Low Visibility Operations/Surface Movement Guidance and Control System (LVO/SMGCS)

Task 5.3.4: Conduct LVO/SMGCS Airport Inspection at Night to Compare the Plan to the Airfield.

Purpose

The purpose of this task is to determine feasibility of safe aircraft operations during reduced visibility as proposed in the LVO/SMGCS plan and as reflected in the LVO/SMGCS taxi chart.

This task is performed at the airport facility at night.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required to Perform Task

    Knowledge of NAS operational requirements

    Knowledge of FAA airport certification rules, policies, and operational system requirements

    Skill in applying system safety principles

    Ability to link local issues with the broader regional, national, and international concerns

    Knowledge of LVO/SMGCS airport layout, signs and marking standards

    Knowledge of LVO/SMGCS charting requirements

    Knowledge of ILS Category II/III standards

    Knowledge of lower than standard takeoff minima requirements

Task Standard

Conduct the airfield inspection and operational exercise to ensure the LVO/SMGCS written plan is comprehensive and supports all aspects of safe operations during periods of low visibility operations.
