SUBJECT:

DME Systems MMEL Policy

MMEL CODE:

34  (NAVIGATION)

REFERENCE:

Previous PL-3, dated February 12, 1979 (Item 4). Original signed by R. L. Collie.

PURPOSE:

To establish standardized MMEL relief for Distance Measuring Equipment (DME) Systems.

DISCUSSION:

Revision one to Policy Letter 3 covers only DME systems. This policy was previously contained as item 4 in former Policy Letter 3, dated Feb 12, 1979, which covered multiple issues.

FAR 121.349 states conditions under which DME must be installed, and action to be taken in the event of failure in flight (notify ATC). FAR 91.205(e) infers that an aircraft may not be operated above 24,000 feet without DME except as approved by ATC following failure in flight.

POLICY:

The following MMEL proviso and repair category applies for DME systems.
